Ipe is in a different category than any other decking material. Its natural density — nearly twice that of pressure-treated pine — makes it impervious to the kind of surface compression, splintering, and wear that eventually shows on softer wood and composite boards. It resists moisture without chemical treatment, repels insects without any applied protection, and develops a silver patina over time that many homeowners consider more beautiful than the original finish.
A properly installed Ipe deck is a generational investment. We've seen Ipe installations that are 30+ years old and still performing at full capacity with minimal maintenance.
The material requires proper installation — consistent gapping for seasonal movement, stainless fasteners to prevent tannin staining, and occasional oiling if you want to maintain the warm brown tone — but for homeowners who understand what they're buying, there's nothing comparable. This is the material we'd put on our own homes if cost wasn't the constraint.
